“Babylon. Myth and Reality” welcomes 250,000th visitor
MetaDesign, Johanssen + Kretschmer (J + K) and the National Museums in Berlin are delighted at the overwhelming popularity of the exhibition “Babylon. Myth and Reality”. Kader Garcido from Barcelona, the exhibition’s 250,000th visitor, received a special welcome from Prof. Peter-Klaus Schuster, General Director of the National Museums in Berlin. The agencies MetaDesign and Johanssen + Kretschmer (J + K) joined forces to develop the campaign for the fascinating exhibition in the Pergamon Museum on Museum Island in Berlin.
The exhibition, which explores the background of the myth of Babel and the reality of ancient Babylon, opened on 26 June 2008. Visitors have the chance until 5 October 2008 to immerse themselves in the fascinating world of Babylon and its cultural treasures. The museum has extended its opening times for the duration of the exhibition, opening on Mondays until 6 pm and Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays until 10 pm. Tickets for a time slot can be obtained directly at the museum or on the internet at www.smb.museum/babylon.
“Babylon. Myth and Reality” explores the background of the myth of Babel and the reality of ancient Babylon. The historical significance and the achievements of Babylonian civilization are not nearly as widely known as the countless myths surrounding the ancient city. This was the springboard for the campaign developed for the exhibition by MetaDesign and J + K: The claim BABYLON WAS NOT BABEL prompts the audience to reconsider what it thinks it already knows by creating awareness of the discrepancy of myth and reality, of Babel and Babylon.
“Babylon. Myth and Reality” is presented by the National Museums in Berlin, the Musée du Louvre and the Réunion des musées nationaux in Paris, and the British Museum in London. Its curators are the Museum of the Ancient Near East and the Art Library in Berlin with the support of the National Library. The exhibition is being presented under the auspices of Germany’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Frank-Walter Steinmeier. “Babylon. Myth and Reality” has been made possible by the Museum Island Trustees.
