Professor Bernard Stein Becomes Creative Director at MetaDesign
Starting in October 2004, Professor Bernard Stein, 54, will assume responsibility for design in one of MetaDesign's three units. At the same time, he will join Thomas Klein and Florian Dengler as the third creative director on the management board of Germany's largest corporate identity and design agency.
MetaDesign and Bernard Stein enjoy a friendly and intense professional relationship that goes back several years. The respected designer has acted as curator of the event series held in MetaHaus since 2003. "We're pleased that Bernard Stein has placed his expertise at MetaDesign's disposal. He'll be a great benefit to our agency and our clients," says Uli Mayer-Johanssen, chief design officer at MetaDesign, commenting on the recent staff addition. Together with Inke Schulze-Seeger, Stein will head a unit of thirty specialists who work for clients such as Volkswagen, the Otto Group and Klett Verlag.
After studying visual communications under Helmut Lortz at the Berlin University of the Arts, Bernard Stein co-founded the Berlin studio Ott+Stein with Nicolaus Ott in 1978. In 1997 he became a member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale, and since 1998 he and Nicolaus Ott have shared a professorship in visual communications at the University of Fine Arts in Kassel. In 1998 he published the typography encyclopedia Typo: When, Who, How with Nicolaus Ott and Friedrich Friedl.
